The city
Rainforest above, soft coral below.
Taveuni, Fiji's third-largest island, is known as the Garden Island for its rainforest, waterfalls and birdlife. The Bouma National Heritage Park has the falls and the trails, and the Lavena Coastal Walk follows the shore between jungle and cascades. Offshore, the Rainbow Reef and its Great White Wall draw divers for their soft coral, and Qamea, Matagi and Laucala lie close by.
Rain falls here in every month. July and August are the driest, at about 100 millimetres, with highs of 27 °C; from January to April close to 300 millimetres a month is usual. Tourism Fiji counts May to October as the cooler, drier half of the year, and the best for diving.
- Bouma National Heritage Park Waterfalls and hiking trails through the rainforest.
- Lavena Coastal Walk A coastal path that pairs jungle trails with waterfalls.
- Rainbow Reef Soft-coral diving and snorkelling, with the Great White Wall among its best-known sites.
