The city
The Savannah, the gulf and the hills.
Port of Spain spreads along the Gulf of Paria at the western end of the Northern Range, part of it on land won back from the sea. Its centre of gravity is Queen’s Park Savannah, some 110 hectares of open grass bought by the town in 1817 and now ringed by traffic. Along its western edge the Magnificent Seven, late Victorian and Edwardian mansions, were built in eccentric, flamboyant styles; to the north lie the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Before Lent the city gives itself to Carnival, with the Savannah’s Grand Stand as the main stage. Downtown, Woodford Square sits between the Red House and Trinity Cathedral, while the evenings belong to the restaurants and bars of Ariapita Avenue. January to April is the dry season; from June each month brings close to 200 mm or more.
- Queen’s Park Savannah A great open green at the top of the city, its Grand Stand the heart of Carnival.
- The Magnificent Seven A row of flamboyant late Victorian and Edwardian mansions along Maraval Road.
- Royal Botanic Gardens The city’s botanic gardens, laid out immediately north of the Savannah.
