The city
A cliff, its caves, and the reef below.
Cayman Brac is a narrow island, about twelve miles by one, and the Bluff gives it its shape: a limestone cliff that runs its length; at the East End a trail leads up its face from Spot Bay towards the lighthouse. The rock is full of caves, Peter’s, Rebecca’s, the Bat Cave and the Great Cave near the top, and climbers use the face itself. Inland, a reserve of 180 acres shelters the Cayman Brac parrot.
Under water there are some fifty dive sites, most within twenty minutes by boat. Off the north-west shore lies the Captain Keith Tibbetts, a Russian frigate brought from Cuba and sunk in 1996, its stern 17 metres down. December to April is the dry season. There is one main road and no bus, so plan on a car or a bicycle.
- The Bluff and the Lighthouse Trail A path up the north-east face of the cliff from Spot Bay, past Peter’s Cave to the light at the East End.
- Captain Keith Tibbetts A former Soviet frigate on the sand off the north-west coast, bow at 34 metres, stern at 17, about 180 metres offshore.
- Parrot Reserve A free trail of about a mile at the island’s centre, home of the endangered Brac parrot.
