The city

Closer to Florida than to Nassau.

Bimini lies about fifty miles off the Florida coast, at the western edge of the Bahamas. Planes land on South Bimini; a ferry crosses to North Bimini and Alice Town, where most of the hotels, restaurants and sights are. Hemingway spent two years here, and the tourism board credits the stay with The Old Man and the Sea; Martin Luther King Jr. drafted part of his Nobel address on its shore.

The draw is the Gulf Stream, which runs close by: marlin, sailfish, tuna and wahoo for the boats, great hammerheads and bull sharks for divers in winter. November to April is the dry season, with highs of 24 to 28 °C; from May the rain sets in, and June is the wettest month.

  • The Sapona A wreck aground since 1926, a rum store in Prohibition and now a dive and snorkel site.

South Bimini Airport is the main gateway, an airport of entry with customs on site. North Bimini also has a seaplane base that is an official port of entry, with customs and immigration.

When to go

November to April.

Winter is dry and mild, 24 to 28 °C with about 40 to 70 mm of rain a month, and the water stays near 25 °C. The wet season begins in May and lasts into October, peaking in June, and the summer afternoons reach 32 °C.
