The city
Light at the top of Denmark.
Skagen sits at the very end of Jutland, a fishing town of some seven thousand people that is still Denmark's main fishing port, with the catch auctioned on the quay at dawn. From the late 1870s painters came here every summer for the fishermen and the light: Michael and Anna Ancher, she the only one born in Skagen, and P. S. Krøyer from 1882. Their museum was founded in 1908 in the dining room of Brøndums Hotel and now holds more than 1,900 works.
Around the town the land is sand on the move. Råbjerg Mile is a dune that still walks, and the drifting sand buried the church of St Lawrence so deeply that it was closed in 1795; only the tower stands. In June, July and August the afternoons reach 17 to 20 °C and the evenings are long in the light the painters came for.
