The hotel
On the long square of Spiš.
Spišská Nová Ves grew up around a square shaped like a lens, which the town calls the longest of its kind, and Hotel Metropol stands on it at Štefánikovo námestie. A few steps away is Reduta, the Art Nouveau theatre and concert house built by Kálmán Gerster between 1899 and 1902. The church tower, 87 metres high, is billed by the town as the highest of all.
The hotel has 52 rooms. Those on floors two to five and on the ninth have been rebuilt, and from the upper ones you look across the town to the High Tatras. Spiš Castle, a UNESCO site, is about sixteen kilometres to the east, and the gorges of Slovak Paradise National Park begin about three kilometres away. Back at the hotel, a wellness floor has five kinds of sauna and a cooling pool.
