The hotel

A pillar saved from the fire.

In 1952 Dwarika Das Shrestha came across carpenters pulling down an old Newar house and bought a fragment of a carved pillar before it went for firewood. With his wife Ambica he went on saving beams, windows and lattices, and in 1964 built a brick house in his garden with the old woodwork set into its walls. The hotel grew from that house and opened in 1972.

The MICHELIN Guide calls it a museum you can sleep in. Its courtyards took more than thirty years to complete, and a workshop on site still repairs damaged carvings. The Pacific Asia Travel Association gave the hotel its Heritage Award in 1980, and in 1999 the founder's daughter Sangita opened a large new wing. A new courtyard wing, built from the founder's last collection of rescued wood, is due in 2026.

  • Krishnarpan A Nepali dinner served as a long procession of small plates, up to a feast of twenty-two, with produce from the family's own farms.
  • The courtyards Carved wood, hand-moulded brick and Newar forms around open courts, where breakfast, lunch and dinner can be taken outside.
  • Pool and spa An outdoor pool, a gym and an Ayurvedic spa with yoga classes, inside the hotel walls.
