The hotel

Water laid out towards the rock.

The fortress on Sigiriya Rock dates from the fifth century, and the hotel is laid out around the view of it. Its 35 acres are a pattern of man-made pools, lakes and streams, arranged so that the fortress keeps appearing at the end of a view. Some villas stand like small islands with water on every side. Minneriya National Park lies about twenty minutes away by car.

The architect, Channa Daswatte, is a protégé of Geoffrey Bawa, and his buildings here are modernist while following the local way of building. The hotel opened in September 2016. In the restaurant, a double-height room that opens onto a terrace, hangs a chandelier by the Sri Lankan artist Laki Senanayake. The spa stands on stilts over one of the ponds.

  • Spa over the water Treatment rooms raised on stilts above a pond, with Balinese therapists working with herbs and oils.
  • Kamatha Sri Lankan dinners served out in a paddy field, and cookery classes for guests who want to learn the dishes.
  • Minneriya nearby Minneriya National Park is about twenty minutes away by car, and the rock itself is on the doorstep.
