The hotel

A hill station in the Nahm Dong valley.

Rosewood opened here in March 2018, on a site in the Nahm Dong valley that had been a hill station in the nineteenth century. Bill Bensley designed it as the house of an expatriate host from a hundred years ago, filled with things gathered from Lao history. The resort sits on a forested hilltop above the river, about ten minutes by car from the old royal capital.

There are only twenty-three places to sleep, and all of them border a stream or the riverbank. Six are tents raised on stilts in the canopy, painted with motifs of the Lisu, Hmong, Akha, Lahu, Palaung and Mien peoples, the first tents Rosewood ever built. A waterfall frames the pool and the spa, a former monk leads meditation, and treks go out into the hills around the valley.

  • Elephant Bridge Bar A bar on a bridge over the river, for cocktails and light plates.
  • Sense Spa Treatments with local herbs and remedies, some in tents on the hillside, beside the waterfall and the pool.
  • With a monk Meditation led by a former monk who lives at the resort.
