The hotel
The old hospital under Mount Phousi.
Amantaka opened in 2009 in the old provincial hospital of Luang Prabang, a French colonial complex on Kingkitsarath Road. It is single-storey, with white walls, pale green shutters and long colonnades, set on the peninsula of the old town between the Mekong and the Khan at the foot of Mount Phousi. The town around them has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
The name joins aman, Sanskrit for peace, with taka, from the Tipitaka, the Buddhist scriptures of the Theravada. The spa uses the old hydrotherapy rooms, and mango and frangipani trees shade the courtyard pool. Before dawn, monks pass on the alms round; the hotel can arrange for guests to take part. Later in the day it runs trips to the Royal Palace Museum, rice planting with local farmers and silk weaving, and sunset cruises on the Mekong.
- Alms at dawn Sai Bat, the morning alms giving to the town's monks, arranged from the hotel.
- The Laotian bath house Aman Spa in the former hydrotherapy rooms, with herbal baths and steam.
- On the river A sunset cruise on the Mekong, with cocktails made on board.
