The hotel
Coppola's lodge on the lake.
La Lancha opened in 2004, the third Central American lodge from Francis Ford Coppola after Blancaneaux Lodge and Turtle Inn in Belize. It stands in the rainforest above the shore of Lake Petén Itzá at El Remate. Francis and Eleanor Coppola chose the Guatemalan textiles, carvings and furniture themselves, and the MICHELIN Guide calls the place rustic, a lodge you choose for its setting. Howler monkeys come to the edge of the decks.
A renovation in 2016 doubled the lake view rooms into suites with their own living rooms, added junior suites up in the trees and doubled the size of the dock. The new rooms used local woods: mahogany, palo blanco and manchiche from certified sources in the Petén. The ruins of Tikal, where more than 3,000 structures stand among the trees, are about 45 minutes away.
- Tikal The great Maya city is about 45 minutes by road. The lodge arranges tours, and the MICHELIN Guide advises booking them before you travel.
- On the lake Canoes and paddleboards go out from the lodge's own dock, and a sunset boat cruise can be added.
- Temazcal The lodge has a temazcal, the traditional Maya steam bath, alongside a pool and a bocce court.
