The hotel

On the rock above Disko Bay.

Hotel Arctic opened in 1984, soon after Ilulissat got its airport. It stands on the rock at the edge of the town, looking out over Disko Bay, where the icebergs calved by Sermeq Kujalleq float out of the Ilulissat Icefjord. The fjord has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 2004. Today it has 76 rooms and nine suites, and reception is staffed round the clock.

The rooms are spread over wings named Qajaq, Umiaq and Puisi, Greenlandic for the kayak, the open skin boat and the seal. Seven Aurora Cabins now sit on the rock in front, joined by a boardwalk, and there are apartments too. The conference centre carries a five-star rating from Horesta, the Danish hotel association.

Before you go.

Arrival Reception is open round the clock. The main door locks at about half past nine in the evening, after which your key card opens it.
Airport transfer The hotel runs transfers to and from the airport; departures leave 1.5 to 2 hours before each flight.
Season Daylight lasts almost round the clock from June to August; in December the sun does not rise.

Getting there

Flying to Ilulissat.

Ilulissat airport is a few minutes from the hotel by car, our estimate, and its new 2,200-metre runway, due to open in October 2026, is long enough for jets. Air Greenland is starting a direct route from Copenhagen, and private jets need a slot and prior permission outside airport hours.
