The hotel

Named after a red dye.

Grana is the old name for cochineal, the insect gathered from the nopal cactus that gave Oaxaca its red dye; the hotel takes its name from the cactus the grana lives on. The house is eighteenth century and protected, so most of the rooms keep their original shape. Three Mexican friends run it, and they have filled it with work by local artists and potters.

The fourteen rooms open onto an inner courtyard. Breakfast is Mexican and included: a team of Oaxacan women cooks on the comal, with local coffee and Oaxacan hot chocolate, at one oversized table shared by everyone in the house. Upstairs, the roof terrace looks across the city to the mountains and is used for yoga in the morning, with the mountains in view.

  • Breakfast at one table Regional dishes from the comal, coffee grown in the state and Oaxacan chocolate, eaten together with the other guests.
  • The roof terrace Views over the old town to the mountains, with yoga in the morning.
  • Santo Domingo The church and its former monastery are one block away.
