The hotel

Jeju's first grand hotel.

The Shilla Jeju opened on 1 July 1990 as the first high-end hotel on the island, and added a second building in 1998. The American firm WATG drew the plans and Samsung built it. The French studio Ogawa & Ferré did the interiors, and Belt Collins laid out the tropical garden. Today it has 429 rooms and belongs to The Leading Hotels of the World.

It stands on Jeju's south coast, in Jungmun, looking straight out over the Pacific. Rooms keep to soft pastel colours, with Korean touches in the furniture, and artwork hangs throughout. There is a spa, a library and a kids' club. Close by are the Yeomiji Botanical Garden, the basalt columns of Jusangjeolli, the Cheonjiyeon waterfall and the ICC Jeju convention centre.

  • The spa The MICHELIN Guide singles out the spa as one of the reasons to stay.
