The hotel
A new hotel in an old quarter.
In the early 1990s Jacob Gelt Dekker began buying the run-down houses of a corner of Otrobanda. He restored them into Kurá Hulanda, a hotel of 82 rooms beside a museum of the slave trade. The hotel went into receivership in 2013, Dekker died in 2019, and hotel operations stopped in 2021. That June, BMG Management, a group of local entrepreneurs, won the bid for the property.
The new owners split it into homes, shops, restaurants and a smaller hotel. Kura Botanica opened in August 2022 with 46 rooms across eight blocks of seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings, inside Willemstad's UNESCO World Heritage area. The name means botanical courtyard, and the gardens hold about fifty species of palm. The museum next door stayed open, in Dekker's memory, and the old lanes now hold restaurants such as Rustiq, Lionfish and Caleo.
- The gardens Three courtyards planted with about fifty species of palm, and a pool with its own bar and a hot tub among them.
- Themed suites A Rum Suite stocked with thirty Caribbean rums, a fitness suite, a games suite and the Royal Desire Suite for couples.
- The museum next door The Kura Hulanda Museum fills several old buildings and courtyards, telling the story of the African slave trade and the Caribbean.
