Grand-Bassam was the first colonial capital of Côte d'Ivoire, laid out at the end of the nineteenth century with separate quarters for trade, government and housing. It was the country's main port and its economic and legal centre. UNESCO added the Historic Town of Grand-Bassam to the World Heritage List in 2012, about 110 hectares in all, together with the N'zima fishing village.

L'Étoile du Sud opened in 1998 on the beach in Quartier France, the colonial district. It is a four-star hotel of forty-two rooms, and every one of them faces the Atlantic. Guests mention a restaurant with a buffet and a pool. Much of the hotel's business has long come from seminars and family ceremonies, and the hotel puts Abidjan at about twenty-five minutes by road.
