The hotel
The flying farmhouse.
Six Senses opened its Bhutan journey in stages, with five lodges across the west and centre of the country. Thimphu, Punakha and Paro were receiving guests by March 2019, with Gangtey and Bumthang due to follow that summer. Punakha is the warmest of them, at 1,400 metres among the rice paddies. The group calls it the Flying Farmhouse amidst the Rice Fields.
The lodge sits several hundred metres above the valley floor along the Mo Chhu, about fifteen minutes' drive north of Punakha Dzong. Six Senses designed it in house, with timber, antique Himalayan rugs and bukhari stoves. MICHELIN describes the feel as pastoral and agricultural. There are sixteen suites and three villas, each villa with a pool of its own, and an infinity pool on the hilltop for everyone.
- The hilltop pool An infinity pool on the hilltop, with the rice fields of the valley around it.
- By the river Drinks on the riverbank with the dzong in view, or breakfast with the monks after a walk up to a monastery.
- Spa and meditation Three treatment rooms, a gym, a yoga pavilion and two meditation huts.
