The hotel

The Fifteen-Storey Building.

Hotel Tirana was finished in 1979, on the site of a former Orthodox cathedral on the city's main square. The architect Valentina Pistoli built it from prefabricated concrete panels faced in white marble, fifteen floors and 56 metres high. For years it was among the tallest buildings in Albania, and people in Tirana still call it the Fifteen-Storey Building.

In the 1980s it lodged members of the Politburo, and tunnels were dug beneath it as escape routes for senior officials. An Italian company renovated it in 2001 and it reopened at four stars as the Tirana International; it was refitted again from top to bottom in 2018. Behind it, the same owner has raised a new 33-storey tower for an InterContinental, a separate hotel.

  • On the square The hotel stands on Skanderbeg Square itself, the centre of Tirana, so the city starts at the front door.
  • The balcony The "Classic" Balcony & Restaurant looks straight down over the square.
  • Meetings Fifteen function rooms spread over 3,000 square metres, by the hotel's own account the largest hotel conference centre in Albania.
