The hotel
A chef's house up the hill.
Two eighteenth-century townhouses in the oldest part of Padstow, once the Tregea Hotel, make up the building. Paul and Emma Ainsworth bought them in July 2014 and spent sixteen months on the work: a new slate roof, sash windows put back, every wall replastered, the house rewired and replumbed. The house is Grade II listed, and it stands a few streets up from the harbour, away from the crowds on the quay.
They opened it at the start of the town's Christmas festival. Emma Ainsworth and the designer Eve Cullen-Cornes gave each suite an imagined occupant and dressed it to suit, from botanical prints in Toffee Apple to sports memorabilia in Bon Bon. The suites take their names from fairground sweets. Paul Ainsworth at No6, the family's starred restaurant, is a short walk away.
- Breakfast hamper Brought to the door each morning: soft-boiled duck eggs with sourdough soldiers, cheese, cured ham, pastries and granola.
- The pantry An honesty kitchen stocked with drinks and sweet and savoury things from No6.
- A car in town A driver in the house BMW takes guests round Padstow, and the team books tables at the Ainsworth restaurants.
