The hotel
A hotel inside a fort.
Needham's Fort went up on this point in 1650 to guard Carlisle Bay and the harbour of Bridgetown. Renamed Charles Fort in 1660, after the Restoration, it beat off a Dutch surprise attack in 1665 and was rebuilt in stone in the 1740s. George Washington visited in 1751. The army left in 1905, and the fort now belongs to the Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison World Heritage site.
The first Hilton was built here in 1966, and the builders stabilised the ruined walls as they went. The present resort replaced it in 2005, two buildings of eight floors, and the fort was restored again at the same time. The point has a beach on each side, Carlisle Bay and Needham's Point beach, with Pebbles Beach a short walk away.
