The hotel
Two journalists and a customs house.
The building went up in 1879 as a customs office. The merchant Lodewijk Pincoffs used it to settle the trade in goods from the Vrij Entrepot, the free warehouse nearby. By 2002 it stood empty and run down, when the heritage foundation Stadsherstel showed it to Karen Hamerlynck and Edwin van der Meijde, two journalists from the Algemeen Dagblad. The building is now a national monument.
They took it on. WDJ Architects restored the building over fourteen months from 2007, keeping the beams, the high ceilings and the old document lift, and the hotel opened on 1 March 2008 as the city's first boutique hotel, with interiors by Mirjam van der Rijst. After sixteen years the founders handed it on to their manager, Marjolein van Asperen, and Milo Pennings.
