The hotel

Where the ships left for America.

The Holland America Line bought this red-brick Jugendstil building at the tip of the Wilhelminapier in 1901 and ran its business from it for more than seventy years. Nearly two million passengers sailed with the company, many of them emigrants who spent their last night in Europe here before boarding. A warehouse and a new façade, finished in 1917, gave the building the shape it has today, with its two towers on the roof.

It came through the bombing of May 1940 that destroyed the old centre across the river. The company moved its head office to the United States in 1977, and the city later bought the building. It opened as Hotel New York on 5 May 1993. The offices and boardrooms became guest rooms and the caretaker's house on the roof became a suite. The wrought-iron staircase is still at its centre, with ship models and old photographs on the walls.

  • The towers Two rooms built into the rooftop towers, one facing the Maas, the other the Rijnhaven.
  • Oysters An oyster bar in the café-restaurant, and oysters as small plates downstairs at NY Basement.
  • By water taxi The water taxi stops next to the hotel, at the company's own headquarters, for crossings of the Maas.

The rooms were once the company's offices, and each faces a different side: the Maas, the Rijnhaven, the pier or an inner patio.
