The hotel

Laterite, thatch and bamboo.

Larisa Hotels & Resorts opened Ashwem in 2022 as its second resort in Goa, after Morjim a little way down the same coast. The cottages were built with materials from the region: laterite stone, thatched roofs and bamboo. They sit on two and a half acres, linked by winding paths past lotus ponds, a stream and stands of palm. Priya Thakur is the group's founder.

There are fourteen cottages, four cottage suites and two suites with two bedrooms. Ceilings are high and floors laid with old patterned tiles. Showers stand in the open behind bamboo walls, and the veranda holds a stone tub. Ashwem beach is a short walk or drive away. Khambir, the only restaurant, sits beside the pool, and Chhaang mixes its cocktails with cashew and coconut.

  • Khambir The only restaurant, beside the pool under the palms, cooking anything from a Goan curry to a pizza.
  • Chhaang The signature bar, known for cocktails made with cashew and coconut.
  • Housekeeping with care Waste is sorted and composted for the gardens, water comes in glass bottles and most of the team is local.
