The hotel

A villa on the slope at Saligao.

The house was built in the Portuguese style about twenty-five years ago and restored by Aditya Gupta with Brij Hotels. Laterite walls, terracotta roofs and open courtyards follow the slope of the land on several levels, and a white arched gateway, painted with flowers, leads in from the lane. A mezzanine over the lounge holds two dining tables and tall shelves of books.

Each of the nine rooms takes the name of a Goan village. Windows open onto palms and trees, and one balcony looks down on the pool. Saligao keeps its village centre close by, while Candolim and the coast lie about fifteen minutes away by car. Cedar, the restaurant, cooks Goan and international dishes, and the house arranges tastings of feni.
