The hotel

Beside the 18th green since 1887.

Johann Rusack, a German hotelier who had settled in St Andrews in 1874, opened the Marine Hotel on Pilmour Links in 1887, owning it with a group of Fife businessmen. It soon took his name. The army requisitioned it in the First World War and used it as a barracks in the Second. Macdonald Hotels ran it from 2001 to 2019.

That year AJ Capital Partners of Chicago bought it for its Marine & Lawn group. In 2021 a six-storey wing by WCP Architects went up on the old car park to the west, adding bedrooms and a rooftop restaurant over the course. The hotel is the official hotel of The 155th Open.
