The hotel
A Polanco house turned all the way up.
The house dates from the 1940s and stands behind wrought-iron gates on Edgar Allan Poe, a residential street a short walk from Avenida Masaryk and Chapultepec Park. It was the first hotel of Pug Seal, the small brand founded by José Quintana and Sergio Celis, which now has a second house around the corner on Anatole France and a third in Oaxaca.
Inside, the original stained glass and tiles stay, and the rest is loud on purpose. The feathered serpent Quetzalcóatl runs through the design, from a hanging at the entrance to a lattice and a wall patterned like scales. Much of the art comes from Mexico City galleries and can be bought. The MICHELIN Guide gave it one Key.
- The temazcal A traditional Mexican sweat lodge in the garden, beside a massage area and the spa.
- Open all hours Tea and coffee stations run around the clock, and snacks, fruit and drinks are part of the rate.
- Bicycles Lent free to guests, for Polanco's tree-lined streets and the paths of Chapultepec Park.
Rooms & suites
Twenty rooms, no two alike.
Room types run from Standard through Deluxe, Superior and Executive to the Master Suite and Master Executive. Patterned wallpaper, stag heads and a palette of beige, aquamarine and slate recur throughout.
- Rooms Standard, Deluxe and Superior Some look over the trees of Polanco's streets, and some have one or two beds for families.
- Suites Master Suite and Master Executive The largest categories. Some rooms in the house have a private terrace and a bathtub.
