The hotel

A Roma townhouse, eight suites.

Yves Naman found the house on Tonalá in 2014: a French-style townhouse of the 1920s, with high ceilings, plaster mouldings and its original floor tiles. He turned the living floors into self-contained suites, three at first, and for a while it was billed as the smallest boutique hotel in the world. With the designer Emmanuel Picault he also opened a shop on the ground floor for goods made in Mexico.

The house became the first of the La Valise hotels; Naman's company, Namron Hospitality, is now based in Tulum. Later work added five suites, a shared living room and the Piscinema, a small pool where films are shown, designed by Naman with Roberto Ayala. The suites carry names from the night sky, Polaris, Nebula, Halo and Nova among them. The MICHELIN Guide gives it one Key.

  • A bed on wheels In the Cilene suite the king bed slides out onto a private terrace at the push of a button, beside an outdoor soaking tub.
  • No front desk Guests are met at the door, and the concierge writes before arrival to set up drinks and the minibar.
  • Breakfast in the suite Coffee, fruit, pressed juice, yoghurt with granola and pastries, brought up each morning.
