The hotel

A silver baron's hotel.

Jerome B. Wheeler, who had put his money into Aspen silver, built the hotel in 1889 as a three-storey brick block modelled on the grand hotels of Europe. It had the only lift in town and was among the first buildings west of the Mississippi lit by electricity. It is the only Aspen hotel to have come through the silver crash, the lean years before skiing and the Depression.

Soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division drank here, and in the 1950s Gary Cooper, Lana Turner and John Wayne stayed. Hunter S. Thompson came later, and so did the crowds of the ski years. The building joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. A renovation in 2012 kept the tiled floors, the balustrades and the Chippendale bar, and added rooms with cashmere curtains and leather beds.

  • The J-Bar A saloon off the lobby with its original chinoiserie bar, the Jerome burger and a trivia night. The hotel calls it an Aspen institution.
  • Bad Harriet A cocktail lounge in the basement, named after Wheeler's wife, with drinks named after women from history.
  • Pool terrace A heated pool with two hot tubs and cabanas, and the Aspen Club's spa and gym open to guests.
