The hotel
Government offices, turned into a hotel.
The Murray Building was finished in 1969 as offices for the Hong Kong government and named after Sir George Murray, a nineteenth-century soldier and colonial administrator. Its windows are set deep and angled away from the sun, a design that won an energy award in 1994. The government sold it for hotel use in December 2011, as part of its Conserving Central plan.
Foster + Partners spent four years on the conversion. They kept the arches and the recessed windows, opened the ground floor to the street, and turned the old driveway into an events space. The hotel opened in 2018. An old tree on the grounds is registered as an Old and Valuable Tree, and Hong Kong Park lies just across Cotton Tree Drive.
- Popinjays The rooftop bar and restaurant has a wraparound terrace over Central and a Dom Pérignon Champagne bar.
- Art on the walls Pieces from the owner's own collection, among them work by Jaume Plensa and Bahk Seon-ghi.
