The hotel
Five peaks from the Silk Route.
Karimabad sits high in the Hunza valley, and Serena calls it the cultural heart of Hunza. The old Silk Route ran through here, and the town's bazaar is about a quarter of an hour's walk from the hotel. Serena bills the hotel as the first five-star address in Gilgit-Baltistan, a region better known to climbers and trekkers than to hotel guests. Gilgit airport is two hours down the road.
What fills the windows is the mountains. Serena names five peaks in view: Ultar, Diran, Lady Finger, Golden Peak and Rakaposhi. The building mixes the local style with modern comfort, and the Heritage Suites take their look from the region. The hotel describes its approach as careful with energy and water, and it buys local materials where it can. A pool and the Maisha spa face the same view.

- Flights Flights into Gilgit are flown by turboprop and only in good visibility, so allow a spare day either side of the trip.
- Season Afternoons reach about 26 °C in July and fall away quickly after September; winters are long and cold.
- By road Skardu, with a longer runway and more flights, is about six hours away by car.
Getting there
Flying to Hunza.
Gilgit airport is about two hours by road, served by PIA turboprops from Islamabad when the weather allows. Skardu International, about six hours away, takes larger aircraft. Private jets enter Pakistan at Islamabad and make the last leg by turboprop to Gilgit or by air to Skardu, then by car.
