The hotel
A tower with a tomb at its foot.
Tirana International Development commissioned the building from 51N4E, a Brussels practice, and it was finished in 2015. The tower rises eighty-five metres from an elliptical base to a rectangular top, clad in angled panels of polished concrete that were cast on site. Beside it stand a five-storey glass block with a cantilevered roof over an open galleria, and a small concrete building whose hollowed quarter dome shelters the tomb of Kapllan Pasha.
The hotel first opened as the Plaza Tirana. In October 2019 it was formally opened under the Maritim name, with Albania's tourism minister and the German ambassador present, as the first hotel in the country officially certified at five stars. The architecture was shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016. Inside are a casino open to the public, eight meeting rooms and the Oblivion spa of 600 square metres.
