The hotel

A sheltered bay on the north coast.

Shangri-La opened its Boracay resort in March 2009, its fifth hotel in the Philippines. It took the far north of the island, in Barangay Yapak, away from White Beach: twelve hectares of hillside running down to a bay with two beaches, Banyugan and Punta Bunga, and some 350 metres of sand between them. Sirena, the seafood restaurant, sits on the cliff above.

The Hawaiian firm WATG drew the buildings and LTW Designworks of Singapore did the interiors, using Filipino patterns and native materials. Every room has a balcony with a view of the beach. The villas sit apart, each with a lap pool, an outdoor shower, a pergola and a day bed. The main pool is one of the largest free-form pools in the country.

Getting there

Flying to Boracay.

Caticlan airport is about 11 kilometres away: a few minutes to the jetty, a short boat crossing to Boracay and a drive up to Yapak, under an hour in all by our estimate. Private jets land at Caticlan by day; an aircraft from abroad first clears customs at Kalibo, 68 kilometres from Caticlan.
