The hotel
The old Libertador in Selva Alegre.
The hotel was built in 1940 in the Spanish colonial style, a low, rosy ochre building in the residential district of Selva Alegre, beside the city's largest park. For decades it was the Hotel Libertador. Long corridors lead to the rooms, which are dressed in the republican style of old Arequipa, and the gardens run out to a pool with the cone of Misti beyond.
Costa del Sol, the Peruvian chain that works with Wyndham, took the hotel over in November 2018 and spent some US$20 million buying and refurbishing it before reopening in April 2019. The grounds still hold alpacas, an organic garden and Juanita, a Galápagos tortoise the hotel says is more than a hundred years old. The cathedral is about fifteen minutes away on foot.
- Gardens and volcanoes More than 36,000 square metres of lawns and buildings, with Misti and the other volcanoes around the city in view.
- Pool and sauna An outdoor pool with a hot tub beside it, a sauna, massages by appointment and a gym open from early morning.
- On foot to the centre Santa Catalina Monastery and the Plaza de Armas are each about a quarter of an hour's walk away.
