The hotel

The Hilton by the lake.

The hotel went up in 1970 as the Madagascar Hilton, and it is still one of the very few high-rise buildings in Antananarivo. For close to forty years it carried the Hilton name. In 2007 the management changed and the tower became the Carlton, now a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts. Its rooms and suites had already been refurbished in 1998, and a 2001 report named it the base of Madagascar Airtours.

It stands in Anosy, on rue Pierre Stibbe, above Lake Anosy in the middle of the city. Rooms look either over the water or down to the pool. Around them the hotel works as a small town: a shopping arcade of more than ten boutiques on the ground floor, a business centre, the Royal Flush casino on the second floor and function rooms for weddings and conferences.

  • The pool A semi-Olympic pool with its own outdoor restaurant and bar, where pizzas come from a wood-fired oven.
  • Sport Tennis courts and a fitness centre, with a hammam, sauna, jacuzzi and massage rooms.
  • The arcade Boutiques on the ground floor, among them a jeweller, a leather goods shop, a duty-free store and a hairdresser.
