The hotel
A tower on the Mekong.
Vientiane long kept a rule meant to leave Patuxai, the victory monument, as the tallest building in the capital. When Don Chan Palace went up in 2004, its builders placed it on an outcrop on the Mekong, and the tower rose fourteen floors. The hotel now calls itself the tallest and the largest in Laos. It stands in Piavat village, on Fa Ngum Road in the Sisattanak district, south-east of the old centre.
Its height made it a business address from the start, and in 2009 it hosted the billiards and snooker of the Southeast Asian Games. Inside are five places to eat and drink, from a Chinese restaurant to a bakery, along with a spa, a fitness centre and the pool. Rooms start at 32 square metres, and the Presidential Suite reaches 130.
