The hotel

Three villas by Vann Molyvann.

The villas went up on the Kep shore in the 1960s, when Vann Molyvann, the New Khmer architect who had studied under Le Corbusier, was reshaping Cambodian building. They once housed the provincial governor, the head of customs and a member of the royal family. The Belgian Jef Moons came to Cambodia on holiday in 2003; on seeing the beach at Kep, he and his partner bought all three within forty-eight hours.

The French architect Françoise Lavielle restored them. The house began with nine rooms in 2012 and has grown to eighteen, each with a teak bed and a terrace of its own. The name, Moons says, means a rainbow circling the sun. Kep National Park is a short trip away, and the same owners run the beach at Kep West.

  • The pool An infinity pool on the edge of the Gulf of Thailand, between the villas and the sea.
  • On the water Catamarans, kayaks and paddle boards from the hotel, and excursions arranged by its Discovery Center.
  • Slow days Spa treatments, yoga facing the sea, a library and bicycles for the coast road.
