The hotel

Sandstone and palms on the river.

Amber Kampot sits on more than a hectare and a half of gardens on the Praek Tuek Chhu, the river that runs past Kampot. The colonial town lies directly across the water, five minutes away by tuk-tuk, and the resort stands in the foothills of the Elephant Mountains. It was the first resort in Kampot to describe itself as five-star.

The architects, Bloom, faced the villas in local sandstone and set them among nipa palms. Recycled Cambodian koki wood went into the build, solar panels supply power, and the owners share three per cent of profits with a nearby village. Interiors are by the local photographer and artist Nathalie Lee, and the villas each pair a terrace with an indoor garden and a bathtub.

  • By boat The resort keeps two boats for sunset trips, fishing and the mangroves of Trapaing Sangke, about ten minutes away by boat.
  • A beach of its own About 1,500 square metres of white sand a short ride from the hotel, cleaned three times a day.
  • The spa Khmer massage and other treatments, with the main pool and its bar over the river.
