The hotel

An island hotel in the Nile.

The resort opened at the end of 1976 on Elephantine Island, which faces the Aswan corniche across the Nile. Mövenpick took over the management in 2004 and rebuilt the rooms, public areas and gardens by 2008, adding a large infinity pool and Nubian touches to the interiors. The Elephantine Extension followed in 2016, and the brand, now part of Accor, still runs the hotel.

Away from the tower, the island is still half rural. Gardens and an organic farm spread between the buildings, and on the west side the rooms look across to Kitchener's Island and its botanical garden. Above everything rises the Aswan Tower, with the Panorama restaurant and bar at the top. Down by the water, Mezze serves Egyptian dishes as the feluccas sail by.

  • Panorama The restaurant and bar at the top of the tower, open for afternoon tea and dinner, with a view in every direction over the Nile and the desert.
  • The boat across The hotel ferry runs day and night, about every ten minutes, and takes some five minutes to reach the east bank.
  • On the island Two pools, a tennis court, an organic farm and a kids' club for ages four to twelve.
