The hotel

A family house on Playa Dorada.

Casa Colonial was built in 2004 for its owner, Don Isidro Garcia, and designed by his daughter, Sarah Garcia. She called the look colonial chic: sheer curtains, mixed furniture and original art, in a three-storey house set among palms on the beach. It became the first member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World in the Dominican Republic, and made the Condé Nast Traveler Hot List in 2005.

All fifty rooms are suites, most with a terrace facing the Atlantic and a whirlpool bath. The master suites have a private entrance and a Roman bath, and the presidential suite stands apart as a house of its own. Behind the beach a mangrove lagoon runs along the dining room, and on the roof sits the infinity pool.

Flying to Puerto Plata.

Gregorio Luperón International, east of the town, is about ten kilometres away, between fifteen and twenty-five minutes by car depending on the source. Private jets use the same airport, where the FBO shares the terminal and a charter landing permit is needed 48 hours ahead. Santiago's Cibao airport is about 70 kilometres inland.
