The hotel

Ramparts on the canyon rim.

Anantara opened the resort in October 2016 on the Saiq Plateau, about 2,000 metres above sea level in the Hajar Mountains. Its walls borrow from the fortified citadels of the region, and the buildings run along the rim of a great canyon. There are 115 keys: 82 rooms facing the gorge and 33 villas, each with a pool of its own. Muscat is about two hours away by road.

At the edge of the cliff is a platform called Diana's Point. Diana, Princess of Wales, came here in November 1986, long before there was a hotel, and the spot still carries her name. Today the resort sets tables there for dinner and brings guests out to look at the stars. On the road up, Nizwa has its fort and its souk.

Flying to Jebel Akhdar.

Muscat International, where scheduled and private flights land, is about two to two and a half hours away by road, past Nizwa and up the mountain. The last climb needs a four-wheel-drive car, which the resort can send.
