The hotel
A garden plan by the sea.
Meliá Tortuga Beach opened in 2011, the first project in Cape Verde for the British developer The Resort Group and the first Meliá hotel on Sal. The architects at HCP spread it over 46,715 square metres and kept it low. A grid divides the site into hotel, residential and villa zones, and a pedestrian axis runs from the entrance down to the waterfront between pools and planted courtyards.
The resort lies south-west of Santa Maria, about three and a half kilometres from the town, on the stretch of coast that leads to the surf beach at Ponta Preta. Its first three years brought half a million guests. Meliá opened a second resort on Sal, Meliá Dunas, in 2014, and the developer has since built more on the islands.
