The hotel

Seventeen hectares facing the reef.

Meliá Dunas opened on 1 November 2014, the group's second resort on Sal after Meliá Tortuga Beach. It was built for The Resort Group, a British developer, and Meliá runs it. The studio HCP Architecture & Engineering planned the whole site, seventeen hectares on the waterfront, from the street layout down to the gardens. At opening it counted 1,143 suites in several buildings, all of them with a view.

It lies on Algodoeiro beach, on the south-west coast of the island, about three and a half kilometres from the town centre. Offshore lies a coral reef with a wide variety of marine life. The resort lists kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing and diving among its sports, and live music plays in an amphitheatre with room for 800. For children there is a water park with slides, a mini-disco and a cinema.
