The hotel
Teranga on the Plateau.
The Teranga opened in 1973 at the bottom of the Plateau, a short walk from Place de l'Indépendance and the port. Its name is the Wolof word for hospitality. From the sea-facing floors the view runs straight across the bay to Gorée, the island of the slave trade memorial, a ferry ride away. The hotel has 247 rooms and suites , more than half of them facing the sea.
A full renovation by the studio designsquared opened up the ground floor to daylight and the ocean. The Senegalese designer Aïssa Dione sourced the woven fabrics, the photographer Omar Victor Diop made the artworks, and metalworkers from Dakar built the sculpted screens in the lobby. Below, a wellbeing floor leads out to a lap pool by the water. For meetings there are four rooms, the largest 272 square metres.
- Teranga Beach Club A restaurant and bar between the heated pool and Dakar Bay, with dishes cooked over a wood fire.
- Pullman Spa A traditional Moroccan hammam and treatments with Kos Paris, next to a gym that looks out to sea.
- Gorée from your balcony The island lies a short ferry ride across the bay, and the sea-view rooms and suites face it across the bay.
