The hotel
A hundred and twenty-five years on Ngo Quyen.
In 1899 Gustave-Emile Dumoutier asked to turn the buildings on his land, on what is now Ngo Quyen Street, into a hotel. André Ducamp added 500,000 francs, and the Grand Hôtel Métropole Palace opened in the summer of 1901. Its façade ran for more than eighty metres, and it was the largest hotel in Indochina. Hanoi soon called it simply the Métropole.
Graham Greene stayed in 1951 while reporting for Paris Match, and three suites now carry the names of Greene, Charlie Chaplin and Somerset Maugham. During the American air raids, Joan Baez and Jane Fonda took cover in the hotel's bomb shelter; it was sealed after the war and found again during works in 2011. In 2009 the hotel became the first Sofitel Legend, and in 2026 it marks 125 years.
- The Path of History A tour for hotel guests at five and six each evening, led by the hotel historian, down into the wartime bomb shelter.
- Le Beaulieu The French dining room, under Marseille-born chef Charles Degrendele, with more than 600 wines and a Sunday brunch to live jazz.
- Spice Garden Modern Vietnamese cooking from Dang Minh Duc, who has run kitchens at the hotel for nearly thirty years.
