The hotel

The first Steigenberger, reopened.

The house opened in 1840 as the Hôtel de l'Europe, facing the Kurhaus across the gardens. Empress Elisabeth of Austria stayed here, and much later Muhammad Ali. In 1930 Albert Steigenberger bought the building, and the hotel group that carries his name grew from it. It closed almost overnight in 2014 over fire safety, the owner went bankrupt, and the building stood empty for more than a decade.

In 2021 a Saxon doctors' pension fund bought it and paid for a full rebuild behind the listed façade. Of the old interior only the Y-shaped staircase survives. DK Studio and Bachhuber Contract did the rooms, and the hotel reopened on 14 August 2025. Within about two months the MICHELIN Guide gave it a Key, and in 2026 it raised that to two.

  • The Vault Spa About 1,300 square metres over two levels, partly in the vaulted cellar that once held the bank strongrooms, with saunas, a steam room and an indoor pool.
  • Luiza on the roof A Mediterranean-style terrace bar above the town, with the Black Forest hills on the skyline.
  • Outside the door The Kurhaus and casino, the theatre and the Kurpark are across the road, and Brenners is a walk of about 600 metres.

Rooms & suites

No two floor plans alike.

The building is listed, so each of the 126 rooms has its own shape and size. Some are apartments for longer stays.

  • Rooms Superior and Deluxe rooms High-ceilinged rooms with pieces made for the house, the first categories in the house.
  • Spa suite Serenity Spa Suite A suite with its own sauna and a freestanding bath.
  • At the top Grand Panorama and Penthouse Residence suites The top of the range, among the fifteen room and suite types.
