The hotel
Five centuries of Schneiders.
The Schneiders have been in Lech since the valley was settled, around 1450, and farmed the high pastures. In 1929 Wilhelm Schneider began taking guests in the family's Walser farmhouse. Leopold, the next generation, built the first ski lift in Lech in 1940. The hotel grew in four stages between 1963 and 1983, until farming gave way to tourism entirely.
Gerold and Katia Schneider are architects. They founded their own practice in 1995 and took over the Almhof the next year. The hotel is now three linked houses under gabled roofs; in 2015 and 2016 they renewed the spa in Salzburg limestone and put the cars underground. Inside it is sanded spruce, oiled walnut, wool and linen, with contemporary art among the antlers.
- The wine cellar A large cellar holding some of Austria's best bottles. The sommelier Josef Neulinger was Gault&Millau Sommelier of the Year in 2018.
- The spa Pools lined in Salzburg limestone, steam rooms, a jacuzzi and treatments on request, plus an outdoor pool.
- On a bad weather day A billiard room full of curios, a private cinema and a kids' club.
