The hotel

An emperor's summer house.

Napoleon III began the villa in 1854 for his wife, Eugénie, as a house for the summer by the Bay of Biscay. Later it became a casino, and in the early 1900s it was rebuilt in the shape of an E, its brick-red and beige front facing the Grande Plage. The City of Biarritz owns it, and Hyatt runs it in The Unbound Collection.

A renovation began in autumn 2018, led by the Paris studio Atelier COS and heritage architect Isabelle Joly. It went in phases: the roof and facades first, then almost every room, restaurant and bar. Craftsmen working in house, a cabinetmaker, a decorative painter, upholsterers and seamstresses, restored the Second Empire furniture, tapestries and fabrics by the old methods. Today it is the only Palace on the French coast between Deauville and Hendaye.

  • The seawater pool An outdoor pool heated to 28 °C on a point above the ocean, with cabanas, and the beach reached from the solarium.
  • Spa Impérial An indoor pool, hammam and sauna over several floors, with Guerlain treatments. Guerlain made its Eau de Cologne Impériale for Eugénie in 1853.
  • La Rotonde The round dining room with a view of 180 degrees over the bay, and a Sunday Imperial Brunch.
