The hotel
New building, old lake.
Lake Como is lined with Belle Époque villas and grand hotels. Il Sereno went the other way. Luis Contreras, owner of Le Sereno in St Barth and Villa Pliniana up the shore, opened it in August 2016 on a sunny promontory beside Torno, along some 450 feet of shoreline. The Milan architect and designer Patricia Urquiola drew the building and almost everything inside it, down to the lamps, rugs and bathtubs.
Materials come from the region: ceppo di grè stone, walnut stair treads set in bronze, Venetian terrazzo in the restaurant. The botanist Patrick Blanc covered walls inside and out with vertical gardens, including a living green sculpture. The suites face the water, each with its own furnished terrace. The kitchen won a MICHELIN star in 2017, after a single full season.
- On the water A heated infinity pool runs along the lake, and the hotel's own Riva boats are kept for guests' trips on the lake.
- The boathouse spa Treatments take place in a restored boathouse at the shoreline.
- A table in the rock A chef's table set in nineteenth-century caves of Moltrasio stone, beside the restaurant's dining room.
