The hotel

On the grounds of a royal palace.

The land on Wireless Road once held Kandhavas, the palace of Princess Valaya Alongkorn, a daughter of King Chulalongkorn, Rama V. She lived there until her death in 1938. The hotel that now stands on the site takes its look from the Thai-colonial style of her era, which the hotel calls Thai Transitional Luxury. There are 374 rooms and suites.

For years the building traded as the Plaza Athenee Bangkok. Its owner, Asset World Corporation, then paid for a complete renovation, and in late 2017 it reopened as The Athenee, a Luxury Collection hotel. Vekhin Interior and Bangkok Dec-Con drew on royal ceremonies, Thai colours and artwork, with a European hand in the detail. The pool was remade too, as a lagoon in a rooftop garden planted with native trees.

  • The lagoon pool A free-form pool in a rooftop garden of native trees and flowers, with The View bar beside it on the fourth floor.
  • Spa Athénée On the fifth floor, listed as Recommended by Forbes Travel Guide. Therapists shape each treatment around the guest's blood type.
  • Embassy row Wireless Road runs through Bangkok's embassy and business district, and the hotel stands on it in Pathumwan.
