The hotel
Two wings on the river.
The Shangri-La opened on 3 August 1986, a 25-storey building on the river designed by Kanko Kikaku Sekkeisha of Tokyo. Its design drew on the hidden valley of James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon. In August 1991 a second building followed, the Krungthep Wing, with 129 rooms and a balcony for every one of them. The original block, now the Shangri-La Wing, holds 673.
The two wings have separate entrances and their own pools, and most of the restaurants sit in the Shangri-La Wing, about ten minutes' walk away through the hotel. The building has been refurbished twice since 2000, most fully between 2007 and 2010. Sathorn Pier is beside the Krungthep Wing, and the hotel boat runs to ICONSIAM. In the evening Salathip serves Thai dinners by the river with classical dance, and the Horizon cruise sets off along the Chao Phraya.
- The riverside pool At the Shangri-La Wing, open from 7 am to 7 pm for hotel guests.
- CHI, The Spa On the second floor of the Krungthep Wing, with Thai and Asian treatments.
- On the water The Horizon dinner cruise in the evening, and a hotel boat to ICONSIAM every hour by day.
